Creating a false alibi leads to errors of commission and omission

A suspect of a crime can avoid legal repercussions by creating false alibi. We examined whether such alibi have adverse effects on memory. To do so, participants watched mock video and were either instructed to create or provide an honest account for what they actually saw in the video. After 2-day 1-month delay, all come forward with truth using free recall task. Participants who initially created had more commission errors after delay (vs. telling participants). Moreover, reported fewer correct details Our study suggests that like other types deception, elicit memory undermining form omission errors.
